Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
Last week we went over how to work toward success, now let's talk about how to maintain momentum. At some point, all those small, positive decisions we've been making add up and create an event or an outcome. This means we've reached some sort of accomplishment, whether it be tangible or not, so how can we ensure that we continue to build upon our progress? We learn how to be uncomfortable.
I am personally learning how to start getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. At first, I would just feel uncomfortable and the feeling would paralyze me to the point that I would negate a lot of progress that I had made. Now, I'm at the point that I recognize when the feeling is on the horizon and I prepare. I get clear on what needs to be done regardless of how I feel. I also remind myself that I only feel this discomfort because it's time to level up and advance. Here's a new mentality that I'm implementing: How does one eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Progress can feel overwhelming at times. Especially when responsibilities and/or tasks have added up after taking time to rest. Don't let overwhelm paralyze you. Continue to push forward one step at a time. Remember to lend yourself some grace for what you are able to do as opposed to reveling in what hasn't been done yet or what still needs to get done. I'm certainly a culprit for being a little too hard on myself, but I'm beginning to understand that you attract more bees with honey - even when you are the bee and work is the honey.
There's a reason that people share the idea that the magic is in the journey and not so much in the achievement. The journey requires so much intention, presence and effort that if we don't savor each moment, we'll miss the enjoyment of the experience. I encourage you to shift your mindset around what success looks like for you. Instead of letting the idea of success be reaching the top of the mountain, try thinking about success as having a fully loaded backpack with all the necessary supplies you need for the journey. Imagine travelling up the mountain and being fully prepared for anything you face - whether it be a mountain lion or inclement weather. Visualize the sense of peace and contentment you would feel when you realize that you are and have all that you need. Once you see it, you can create it. Come back and share what comes of your mindset shift!
